Paradox of Sound.jpg

From an idea to a purpose...

January 18, 2017

The theme of sound began with my work during my Bachelor of Fine Arts. I was interested in the effect that music and sound had on my life and wanted to show this in my artwork. My early work focused on the positive and negative effects that sound can have on us. In my first sound piece, I manipulated sound waves into circles. This was the beginning of creating what I call "sound circles." I used silk screening techniques to create the piece "The Paradox of Sound." This piece is pictured in this blog post. The next piece I made commented on the complex relationship between charismatic speakers and the affect of their speeches on world events. The piece "Complex Connections" juxtaposes the speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. and Adolf Hitler. I wanted to show how influential an idea can be and how it is spread around the world; for better or for worse.

These ideas percolated in my mind for some time after I completed my Fine Art degree. I went on to do my Bachelor of Education in Vancouver and my art took a back seat. I began my teaching career and my focus was on becoming settled into my methods as a teacher. This year, I started teaching high school art classes and it was a dream come true! Finally, I am teaching to my true passion. Being able to teach a subject that I care deeply about has ignited my passion for creating my own art again.

In October, I applied to the "Under 100 Art Show" and was accepted! This was the motivation and the push I needed to start creating art again. I came back to my ideas about music and sound and started experimenting with alcohol inks. I produced 13 original pieces in two months! This was the most art I had created since my Bachelor of Fine Arts. Delving back into a familiar theme was motivating and rewarding. Being able to share my work with others during the show was validating! Being apart of the Calgary art community again is refreshing and motivating for me. I am exploring new ways to express my ideas and ways to share my art with others. Stay tuned for exciting new opportunities coming my way!
